Overview

csRingShear

The Clisp Studio csRingShear module is an add-on to the core package (csHost) that makes it easy for the User to set-up, control and monitor a Ring Shear test in soil testing laboratories and collate and output the results in industry standard or User defined format.

Create

Ring Shear Test Setup

Clisp Studio csRingShear comes with the easiest test creation and setup of any Geotechnical Shear software package available today. Choose the Ring Shear test type, name the Test, select the appropriate Standard and proceed through the steps of the wizard, initially setting up the specimen details and hardware relevant to your Test set up.

Initial Test Setup

Once the Test equipment has been set up, csRingShear enables you to create the required Ring Shear test to BS1377-7:1990 or ASTM D6467-13.

The relevant Ring Shear Instrument and its associated Load Rings and Displacement Transducer can then be selected from the Hardware Setup screen

Specimen Details Setup

The Dimensions setup screen will automatically calculate and display the Specimen’s Calibrated Volume and Bulk Density from the data entered by the User. Similarly, the Moisture setup screen will automatically calculate and display the Specimen’s Moisture, Dry Density, Voids Ratio and Degree of Saturation from the entered data.

Configure

Ring Shear Test Configuration

With Clisp Studio you have complete control of Ring Shear Testing for Consolidation and Shearing. Every aspect of both stages can be configured to perform a standards based test or a a custom test specific to your exact needs.

Consolidation Stage Setup

Input the Vertical Stress to be applied (in kPa) during the Consolidation Stage (this needs to be calculated from the weight to be applied). You can add (or delete) additional Vertical stresses  if required using the ‘+’ and ‘x’ icons.

Data logging during the Consolidation phase can be done by selecting an existing Time Table from the pull down menu, or if required, a new Time Table can be set up.

You can specify that the Consolidation phase will be terminated when either  the Specimen settlement does not change by more than a specified value within a specified time period and/or when a specified time period has elapsed. You can also request an e-mail alert and/or an audible warning when Consolidation has finished (if required).

Shear Stage Setup

The Shear Stage setup must be done for each schedule that has been set up. You specify the number of revolutions to form the Shear plane and then input the rate at which to return to the Initial Load.

Shear Stage Setup (cont.)

There will then be a pause (which must be greater than or equal to the t100 value (calculated at the end of the Consolidation Stage)). The Shearing stage will be triggered after the specified load change has been detected.

You can specify whether Data Logging is done at a specific rate or at a specified change in Angular Displacement.

The Shear Stage will be terminated when either the Residual Shear Stress has only changed by the specified amount in a defined time period and/or the Corrected Relative Displacement extends beyond the specified level. An e-mail alert can be requested upon termination of the schedule.

You can either enter the Shear Speed details manually by entering the required Shearing Rate and Reversing Rate or calculate them using the Estimated Shear Failure Deformation value and t100 value calculated from the Consolidation Stage.

Execute

Ring Shear Test Execution

You are able to monitor the status and condition of the Ring Shear test as it proceeds. Live Views, Graphs and Tables show test progress while summary windows give Instrument, test and sample status at a glance.

csRing shear live view

Live Test Views

For both stages (Consolidation and Shear) we offer predefined live data views to observe the most commonly measured variables and calculated data for the specimen being tested, whilst the Test Stage is running. This enables you to keep a close on eye on the measured parameters to check that everything is progressing well. Clisp Studio also enables you to customize the desired Live Data from the list of variables that are relevant to that particular stage.

Live Graphical and Table Views

For both stages (Consolidation and Shear) Clisp Studio enables you to monitor the Test progress both graphically and in the form of a table whilst the Test Stage is running. There are Predefined Graphs which plot using the usual axes and predefined Tables which display the most commonly measured parameters and expected results as the Test progresses, but you can also customize the desired Graphs and Tables from the list of variables that are relevant to that particular stage.

Report

Ring Shear Test Results

As well as the completed Live Data View, Graphs and Table, csRingShear gives you a number of result tables covering the Shear stage. Data can easily be exported to external packages and also imported when using a script.

Shear Results

The Shear Results Table provides the Peak Shear Stress, the Residual Shear Stress and the Estimated Shear Failure Deformation. Two or more Consolidation and Shear Stages (with increasing loads) are required to obtain the Angle of Shearing, which is deduced from the Summary Graph using a cursor line.

Customized Reports are available on request from VJ Tech if required.

Data Export and Import

Clisp Studio has the ability to export the entire Test to MS Excel for further data manipulation. The Test can also be exported to a script file which can be imported when creating a new Test if desired. This enables Tests from the current or older versions of Clisp Studio to be cloned or even rerun if required. This facility is extremely useful for Test exchange between laboratories or for investigation of an issue by VJ Tech.
